In 1969, nine colorectal surgeons organized the Philippine Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons (PSCRS). In March 8, 1970, the first inauguration and oathtaking of the officers of the PSCRS were held at the Manila Hilton. Dr Porfirio M. Recio was the first president, also acknowledged to be the father of colon and rectal surgery in the Philippines; Dr. Felix H. Tambuatco served as the vice president and Dr. Teodoro P Nuguid served as secretary-treasurer. Dr. Ambrosio F Tangco was the guest of honor and the inducting officer. Other founding fellows included Dr Miguel V Ampil, Dr Teodoro M Collantes, Dr Carlos Magsanoc and Dr Redentor Pagtalunan.

In 1992, the Board of Colon and Rectal Surgery was created to be the examining and certifying arm of the PSCRS. Its mission is to maintain the highest standards in the practice of colon and rectal surgery in the Philippines. At present there are two fellowship training programs offering training in colon and rectal surgery namely Philippine General Hospital and Jose Reyes Memorial Medical Center. Activities of the society included postgraduate courses, bimonthly scientific meetings and other annual scientific meetings in coordination with the Philippine College of Surgeons
With its rich history, and with the infusion of fresh and dynamic members, the PSCRS is expected to grow even further, strengthening its leadership role in the development of colon and rectal surgery in the Philippines
